Cabernet Sauvignon

As the most planted vinifera grape in WA state, Cab is King. We planted Cabernet Sauvignon here on our property in 1998 and have won multiple awards for our Cabernet, most recently a Double Gold medal at the Winepress NW Platinum judging.   Aside from our own Estate fruit, we source Cabernet Sauvignon from Quintessence Vineyard in Red Mountain and McKinley Springs Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills.

A good amount of our Cabernet production is assigned to our Reserve program, giving the wines added complexity and maturity from extra time in the barrel. We also use our Cabernet Sauvignon as the base for some of our more popular red blends, like Homage and Paisan.  Our Bordeaux Club members receive the lion’s share of these wines, and Cliff Club members receive regular selections of our Cabernet Sauvignon as well.

Barbera

We are a Barbera house, first and foremost, producing several wines made from this Piedmont varietal.  Our passion for Barbera began in 1990 when we planted our Old Barbera vines.  These are some of the very first plantings of Barbera in the Pacific NW and are used to make our Estate Barbera.  We make a Winemaker's Select Barbera, utilizing fruit from select vineyard sites in WA state, as well as Reserve Barbera, which spends extra time in the barrel before bottling.  Red blends and Rosé wines are also made from Barbera here.  Finally, there is the “Blood Red” Barbera, a rich, ripe style of Barbera and one of our most popular wines.

Our Barbera wines have won numerous awards and medals, including Gold, Double Gold, Platinum, Double Platinum, Best in Class, and Best of the Best.  To accommodate and control the demand for these wines, we created a wine club – the Barbera Club – where members are guaranteed bottles of these small-production wines every year.

Red Blends

We make a variety of red blends every year, including Bordeaux-style blends like Homage, GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) blends like Ami, and Italian varietal blends like Paisan and Piacere. We also produce adventurous, unorthodox blends like Avanzo, Goat Head Red, Horsethief Red, and Petroglyph Red. Some of these blends are more traditional, suitable for longer aging. Others are playful and made to be everyday house wines.

Most of these blends are included in the quarterly Cliff Club packages, but some of them are also included in the Bordeaux and Piedmont Club packages. Our wine club online deals often include our red blends as well.

Syrah

Another standout wine for us is our Syrah. We planted Syrah here on our property in 1998 with phylloxera-resistant rootstock and have used this fruit for both single-varietal and blended wines. Our style of Syrah – like most of our red wine – is rich, fruit-forward, and representative of the warm, dry area the fruit is grown in. Aside from our own Estate fruit, we source Syrah from Stanton Vineyard in Red Mountain and Chukar Ridge here in the Gorge.

Our Syrah has been awarded Gold, Double Gold, and Double Platinum (Best of the Best) medals.  Cliff Club members receive regular bottles of our Syrah throughout the year.

Nebbiolo

We have been growing and producing this rarely seen Piedmont varietal since 1988 and have some of the very first plantings of it in the Pacific NW here on our vineyar. Our Nebbiolo production is very small and includes single-varietal wine, red blends, Reserve selections, and Rosé wine.  Like our Barbera wine, the Nebbiolo we produce consistently receives high praise and awards from the wine industry and continues to provide a delicious, intriguing wine for the general public.

Since our Nebbiolo production is so limited, we dedicate most of it to our wine clubs, in particular, the Piedmont Club. Although this red wine is the lightest color of our red wines, it is one of the best aging wines due to good amounts of tannin and acid.

White/Rosé Wines

While our wine production focuses primarily on red wine, we do produce a broad selection of white and rosé wine every year. Our estate vineyard has plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Arneis, and the rare Symphony varietal, all providing us with fruit for our white wine production.

We use Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Sangiovese – from both estate and outside vineyard sourcing – for our rosé wine production.

In addition, we source high-quality fruit from nearby vineyards to provide our customers with white wines such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Roussanne, Gewürztraminer, Petroglyph White blend, and more.

Viticulture

Our Estate Vineyard began in 1986 with Merlot plantings, followed by Nebbiolo in 1988, and Barbera in 1990.  Over the years, we have included varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Dolcetto, Symphony, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel.  Our newest addition is Arneis, a white/green varietal home to Piedmont, Italy.  Our Barbera and Nebbiolo vines are some of the very first plantings of these varietals in the Pacific NW.  The vineyard is within the Columbia Valley AVA.

The 20-acre vineyard is situated on basalt rock and alluvial soils 260 feet above the Columbia River. Light reflection off the river to the south supplies an abundance of light to the vines. The Columbia Hills sits to the north over the vineyard ranging from 2600-3200 feet. The heat captured by these cliffs radiates back onto the vineyard, providing extra heat units.  Consistent winds that blow in from the west provide the vineyard’s canopy with essential airflow, keeping the environment dry and helping to protect it from mildew and rot.  These natural elements create an ideal environment for viticulture.

Our vineyard is in the Cascade Mountains rain shadow, thereby allowing for an exceptionally long, warm, and dry growing season.  Committed to maintaining the rich alluvial soils common to the region, Cascade Cliffs is an earth-friendly grower, utilizing organic and bio-dynamic strategies and techniques throughout the vineyard.
